Schoen, "the wave of immigration a century ago also brought to this country some of the most important contributors to American culture, science, business, education and health care, to mention a few." In making this comment, Schoen is saying that immigration is not as bad as most people think it is and that immigration spreads different cultures and different proficiencies all over the world that society can benefit from as a whole.
